100's show up in honor of General Vang Pao
January 29, 2011-Recent news of the passing of General Vang Pao has sent shocks among the Hmong community within the Metro Detroit area and nationwide. Gen. Vang Pao, an iconic figure in the Hmong community and a key U.S. ally during the Vietnam War, died Thursday afternoon (January 6, 2011) in Clovis after spending days in the hospital with pneumonia and a heart problem.
In response, the Hmong community of the metro Detroit area held a candle light vigil in honor of General Vang Pao, located at the Knights of Columbus in Clarkston, MI. The Hmong of Oakland County, Hmong Metro Detroit, Hmong Family Association of Lansing, Hmong American Association of Lansing and Great Lakes Hmong Association all took part in the organization of the vigil. Over 100 people, young and old, filled the Knights of Columbus to share stories and expressed their appreciation for General Vang Pao.
A six-day traditional Hmong funeral is set to take place on February 4-9, 2011 at the Fresno Convention Center located Fresno, CA. Over 30,000 people from all over the world are expected to attend. Several community leaders and individuals in the Metro Detroit area are also expected to attend.
